Felicia Honkasalo — Pet Cemetery

Set within the grounds of a pet cemetery, this site-specific binaural audio work adopts the form of a dark fairytale to explore how remembrance is bestowed, withheld, or erased. The main character, a cat’s ghost, considers why certain animals are commemorated through names, graves, and rituals of mourning, while others remain unmarked and forgotten. Tracing shifting lines between love and neglect, intimacy and estrangement, it asks who is embraced as a friend and who is rendered other. The cemetery itself becomes both stage and subject: a Gothic landscape where memory and absence overlap, and where the boundaries of remembering and forgetting shape how we understand not only animals, but our wider relation to the natural world. Inspired by true events.
